If everyone believed sexual orientation was unimportant, and if people weren't assaulted and discriminated against for sexual orientation, then we could comment on the sexual orientation of people who were heroes tangentially- as we do with heterosexuals (Hero X leaves a wife and small child, Hero Y leave a life partner of 5 years, blah blah blah). But we live in a world where some people think being gay is evil in and of itself. Until we reduce the numbers of people who think that way (if we think that it is a good thing to reduce the numbers of those people, and I think we will have a more peaceful society if we do reduce the numbers of people who think that way), it is probably worth while to point out the facts that contradict their premise- ie that being gay does not make you a bad person, and you can, in fact, be gay and be an extraordinarily good person.
