Contrast the present-day conservative Republicans, driving gas-guzzling SUVs,

You reveal a great deal in this assertion. Are you concerned only about Reps that drive SUV's or are Dems/Libs that drive SUV's unpatrotic as well? It also shows how you would use public policy for your own political gains and punish your idealogical opposition. You do the same with guns. Totalitairian's do that.

That's why I don't trust Dems.

defending their "right" to do so ... with the sacrifices our parents and grandparents made during World War II.

Your political motives stain their unselfish sacrafices.

Bottom line flapjack:

That's not the majority of republicans in this country. Look at the geography of people voting republican.

Second bottom line:

We will all be giving up our toys soon enough. Its just a matter of time before we will go the way of Europe. I live in LA, and although I could easily afford a large gas guzzling SUV, I would rather not own one in this cesspool of a city because it's not convenient. The fact is I actually considered a honda insight in my last car purchase. But i didn't get it... Why? It's not an economically viable mode of transportation for me, and it's overpriced. Look at the direction with the Honda CRV and others...it's just a matter of time before technology catches up to modern convenience. Try getting a decent showerhead these days or a toilet that flushes more than 3.3 gallons....etc..
