Actually this conflict is as old as the hills. Ultimately the Gordian Knot must be cut. But the West isn't ready for that yet. Imo it's coming though.

With that, I will fade into obscurity.

Palmerston was secretary of the Foreign Office during what the brits call the The First Afghan War ... so quite applicable .... here's a bit from google -
