The Chinese were fundamentalists about communism, even if they were atheists about religion. The little red book was biblical in nature, and Mao might as well have been a God. The problem is absolutism of all kinds. Agnostics are the only safe critters. You'll never find a crusader who says "Let's go out and murder all those people, because we might be right, and then again, we might not...."

But you are talking about situations where the government was run by and for atheists. Where freedom of religion does not exist. I know of no atheists on this site who advocate such a situation. I certainly don't.

But if you wish to cite Communism, then you must also consider situation where religionists were in control of the government. Witch trials, anyone?
