Roxbury Russet is the bestIMHO. Doesn't look so hot but it ripens late and lasts a long time. Good for pies, applesauce and eating. Best for eating if peeled.

That's neat. I'm glad you went.

I think I like too many different kinds of apples to be able to pick one as a favourite. Also, some of the ones that I like are unidentified trees that grow in "secret places". One of my favourites is a tree that grows on a steep riverbank on a creek where I paddle a lot. The apples are a sort of cherry red and very odd-shaped... kind of bulgy. NEVER has any worms or scab, etc.. even though it's just out in the wild (actually a GOOD reason for it to be so healthy, IMHO). The only way to pick them is to paddle under the tree in the canoe and then knock the apples off into my canoe with my paddle.

Then, there is the quasi-Golden Russett growing back in the forest here... It's entirely a wild thing that came up on its own years ago. Gets a couple of dozen apples on it each year but is getting bigger all the time. It's pretty neat... apples truly look like they are made of bronze.

But, for easy to find varieties, I'm a big fan of the Ida Red apples, especially if I can get them fresh from the orchard on the next road. Mmmmmm.....(o:
