That was just the essay. In the book "Clash of Civilizations..." the author does some historical studies which show Islamic nations and China to be the most likely to respond violently to perceived crisis situations, with a higher percentage of violent responses than the US. There is also a lot more in the book in response to globalization and cultural conflicts.

While I wholeheartedly prefer diplomacy to war, I do not believe diplomacy in and of itself will solve what is essentially a religious conflict. Not when the religious conflict has spanned millennia.

If we are fortunate, a military conclusion, even short term, may give room for diplomacy to work. But IMHO, I have doubts for the success of either longer term.
