Reobear, I share your skepticism, but when I use the term "diplomacy," I really mean the much broader process of resolving problems without recourse to military action. While there are differences in religion that might at first look unbridgeable, those with knowledge of different cultures, including languages and anthropological factors, might have a better chance of success than those advocating military solutions, or even solutions that involve at least some military action.

At present, at least from what is known about the Administration's approach to this problem, I'd characterize the efforts as terribly simplistic, even though they appear to recognize that the military only approach won't work.

You've captured my imagination with additional details on the book, and I might just go and take a look.
