The 'rest of the world' doesn't spend whorishly to protect it, and we are by far their biggest customers.

Well, if we take seriously the concept of our consumer petro-dollars as a form of foreign aid, regardless of who steps in to fill the breach in our absence, I think events have amply demonstrated that *our* import dollars are better spent elsewhere. I keep thinking back to Bush's call during his press conference for Russia to consider "a new strategic relationship" with the United States. What better place, what better way to start?

I agree we need to do more drilling and exploration closer to home. That gun-happy moron in Alaska needs to be air-lifted to Kabul, imho.

Don't think so

Even the slightest reduction in US consumption of oil from insane countries will greatly impact the those countries, with their high debt and high lifestyles, and their worry over the current low price of oil.

If the US reduces general consumption, it doesn't mean other countries will increase theirs.

It's likely other countries would follow our lead, either overtly or covertly.

As you say, the symbolism will have great impact in any case.

If this gains momentum, I'll be tickled to see the frenzy of disinformation from the insane countries, to persuade US consumers not to do this. Nothing more powerful than an idea whose time has come
