I agree. To me it's also important to know someone is gay, about as important as it is for me to make it clear at the beginning of any personal relationship that gender preference is a non-issue in my life and the life of my family. This way, I don't find myself subjected to anti-gay jokes as often. And when I do, I make it clear that think they're offensive.

We've got a number of gay people in our lives, and when they are invited to our home, my priority is to make them feel comfortable, as I do with every guest. At this point, we don't have too many friends who are openly homophobic. They've winnowed themselves out of our social circle. As they have out of my online life as well, come to think of it.
