I am jumping in here without reading the rest of the discussion on this point, but I wanted to say one thing in response to this:

Its the WAY it was done....

A confrontation is not always necessary.

The way it was done was directly proportional to the way the check was offered. The man came to ground zero, and while he was there had his assistant read a statement which implied this was all our fault for not supporting the Palestinians. It was all done very publicly, therefore the response had to be public.

Rudy did show restraint. He didn't use any words that our kids couldn't hear. In fact, if my kids were a little older, I would sit them down and say to them, listen to what this man (Rudy) just said. That is the most important lesson you can learn from this. That is how you identify the evils you must confront in life.

A confrontation is not always necessary. When we rebuke or spank our kids, we don't go around doing it in full sight of everyone.

True enough, you don't want to damage their self-esteem.

But Saudi Arabia is not a kid, and too often in diplomacy the strength of the message is lost by continuous filtering and positioning.

What Guiliani said was straightforward; what the Prince did in his statement was like pouring oil on a fire. He should have known better.
