How about if Iraq is in any way involved with these attacks, the United States invades and occupies that country, taking 90% of its oil production for the next twenty-five years in reparations for what was done. That would teach the terrorists a little lesson in American resolve and power. Also, adios OPEC. Iraq is sitting on 11% of the world's known oil reserves, second only to Saudi Arabia's 25%. Occupy that country and oil will drop to fifty cents a barrel. Perhaps it is time. The financial drain on the world economy sending hundreds of billions of dollars each year to a region of despotic, human-rights-violating, corrupt tyrants who have done little more in the past hundred years than win the geographical lottery - it's time to end this right about now.

In my opinion, I am convinced Iraq is involved, and I hope the U.S. does occupy Iraq and claim oil for reparations - for the cost of these attacks and also "punitive damages", you might say.

whether the USA would object to a bit of territorial acquisition in the region to reduce disputes

Personally, I would favor the replacement of the Saudis with King Abdullah and his Hashemite clan, and turn Jordan into the Palestinian state that it was supposed to be.

After all, they have no more claim to the throne than the Hashemites, or anyone else. And I consider Abdullah a MUCH more moderate and fair ruler.

Of course, that would have to occur over the dead bodies of the Wahhabi Mullahs who jealously guard their role of being guardians of Mecca and Medina.

what would happen if.... Saudi Arabia to be more enthusiastic about supporting the USA changing the government of Afghanistan to a secular self-governing UN protectorate

Not likely. Remember that the Taliban base their religous puritanism on the Wahhabi belief system. That's why, although disowning Bin Laden, they were willing to provide financial support to the Taliban. It created something for the Shiite Iranians to worry about on the other side of their borders.

The Taliban, and the Saudis only want Sharia, because it provides their leaders EMMENSE power over life and death within their nation. There's a politico-religious "mafia" that operates in SA and Afghanistan, and no one dare oppose it, or disrupt the precarious balance of power there.
