Frank,

Re the ATT Broadband ISP service disruption. From the article it seems the problem came up when a new server was added to handle the increased number of users.

ATT Broadband purchased MediaOne (which had a good reputation in our area). They then bought Cablevision's Massachusetts' cable systems. In my town, Sudbury, Cablevision was in the midst of an upgrade of cable service. Most of the town has new fiber and HFC installed and the complete upgrade is waiting for the head end to be upgraded and service cut over. The head end will serve five towns including Sudbury.

ATT Broadband claimed lack of funds as a reason for not completing our upgrade on schedule (and in conformance with our license agreement). The Selectmen held a public meeting to hear from ATT Broadband on the reasons for the delay. The meeting had over 100 attendees and this was the largest crowd ever to attend one of their meetings.

In essence ATT Broadband said they chose to fund upgrades where there was a better potential for a good return on their investment and delay ours until next year. Not a popular decision.

If you are so unfortunate as to have to call ATT Broadband for a service complaint you are most likely to get a busy signal. So far it looks like rough sailing for what seemed to be very promising roll out of broadband.

Our town is anxious to get reliable broadband access to the Internet. DSL is not a viable alternative for many residents. Verizon is not exploiting this opportunity.

In essence Sudbury has a "Last Mile Problem" that is waiting for known technology to be funded by a willing service provider.

Regards,
Hal
