What you describe sounds like an L-shaped bear market. The same thing happened during 1966-1982. Although there was no positive return during those years, there were several mini bull and mini bear markets. Ample opportunity to make a profit.

I think the best returns for the next several years will be made by those who buy during times of extreme pessimism and are nimble enough to sell before the next mini-bear strikes. IMHO LTBH won't be as successful.
