Amy,

re: So, when this snaps back, there's just no buffer in the channel to absorb any significant growth.

A good question is will demand "snap back", or slowly build off the bottom. The demand fall off was certainly abrupt, but I don't know that that means the demand build will be equally abrupt. I half listened to Microsofts CC, they were bullish on servers, but not optimistic on PC's, at least for their current 2nd quarter.

There have been CIO surveys (sorry no link) that report that 70%+ plan to upgrade/replace PC's next year. That's about in line with the expected cycle. Windows XP should be gaining traction by at least the second quarter of next year, for consumers. MHz will probably be in the 2 GHz to 2.5 GHz range by the second half (anyone correct me if I'm wrong), making the current product base seem very slow. So the stars may be aligned to give us a "snap back" in demand.

Of course there are also the geopolitical and subsequent economic hiccups that could stall an IT recovery indefinitely.
