I think the monarchy really lost a lot of its point when we no longer needed either a specially-bred, trained and vicious battle leader, nor even a puppet to wave around abroad... the coming of mass media (so that everyone could see their faults) was when the problems really started, however :) On the federation; well, maybe sounds interesting - but only if we get to call it the British Empire <g> But believe me, we want to leave Northern Ireland OUT of it. Maybe agree to let them in if they can behave themselves for, ooh, fifty years or so. LOL, as if... Seriously, I think within 50-100 years something very like this may have happened in fact if not in notional law: whether it will be restricted to just the Anglophone countries, and/or by hemisphere, is another matter.
