Tony: OTOH, since you mentioned Mercedes, BMW immediately comes to mind as one that has built a great brand name, and, much more recently, Lexus. So how did Lexus do it? Quality, reliability, and tagging along with the excellent reputation Japanese cars in general established in the past few decades, plus excellent styling, good looking cars. What does Jerry do? I don't know. Maybe start off by trying to show some class himself?

Jerry is Jerry and that isn't going to change. If he holds true to his promise, he'll only be in charge for another 6-8 months (IIRC).

However, your example of Lexus is actually quite intriguing. Maybe AMD should buy SGI and use their brand name as a "Lexus", keeping AMD as their "Toyota". If need be, they could have SGI completely vertically integrated, delivering high-end workstations and servers (including the service aspect), as well as the chips. SGI has a very solid reputation and a very solid work force (from what I understand, anyway).
