re:"Hey Bill, I'm sure you're unbiased enough to realize that the U.S. is as good as anyone at this game.
Airlines ($15 big ones!!!), steel, software engineers'
salaries...
When the Americans are beating the foreigners, it's called
protectionism. When the foreigners are beating the
Americans, it's called dumping, slave labour wages,
or something else that sounds unfair."

What exactly are you saying?
The US finances it's companies against foreign companies?

Neil, the USA allows companies that make bad economic decisions to fail, witness the S&L scandals. Com[pare that to the Japanese and Koreans...they keep them afloat even as their old boy network commits enormous frauds....to save other members of the OBN.
I cannot recall the USA supporting software engineers or airlines for ecpnomic woes due to bad decisions. The WTC was a uniform disaster and the USA supports victims, much like hurricane support.
Steel, antidumping duites, but loans no. And those antidumping duties are agin those Japanese and Korean companies with zero interest loans. Love that, give me a zero interest loand and I will buy a biiiig house.
