You think it is wrong to jail murderers, or to treat schizophrenics? Because something is abusable does not mean it has no proper use.....

Treating schizophrenics does not include torturing or experimenting on them. There was a case here recently where a farmer killed his young daughter that was suffering from a chronic wasting disease. The child would have been long dead if our teaching hospital here had not kept the child alive with multiple surgeries and drugs. The father is suffering the consequences of his actions behind bars, as he should be, because taking life must be taboo. I believe extending it when there is no hope of improvement must also be taboo.

I read your little rant with great interest.

"...the core of morality is the just ordering of society and the inculcation of those traits that enhance the ability of society to balance cooperation and competition, and lead to improvement, I think it is necessary for society to be a liberal democracy and basically capitalist in order to create a more perfectly moral culture. I think that democratic capitalism is not only superior to any other social arrangements, but that is the only matrix out of which the right moral sensibility can be inculcated on a widespread basis."

Society cannot be just if it is ordered and true capitalism cannot exist under those conditions either. I know very moral people that came from former dictatorships so to suppose morality cannot flourish is out the window in my opinion.

Society near big centers naturally forms into capitalistic ways of life and rural areas naturally form into more communal ways of life. The farm communes in the former Soviet Union operated that way for centuries and had nothing to do with imposed societal constructs dictated by a central authority. Cold harsh conditions dictated how those people lived long before the manifesto arrived.
