the main difference is that a compiler is SOFTware and one can accept bugs and release patches which is difficult to do if you etch layers on a piece of silicon.

I understand what you are saying, but that is not really the point I was making. The challenge of resolving a bug in the field depends more on the distribution volume of the product than whether it is hardware or software.

For example, if it was discovered that programs running on Windows/XP could not do certain division calculations, after shipping a gazillion copies, it would be more disastrous than a processor not being stable at 1.13 GHz when very few were actually shipped :)
