Hi chooseanother; Re winter coming. The approach of winter is a very good thing for the U.S., very bad for the Taliban.

(1) Those parts of Afghanistan that are "pacified" (or at least friendly towards the U.S.) will undoubtedly get efficient emergency food deliveries from the air. On the other hand, I would be willing to bet that the areas that shoot at American planes won't get fed much at all.

(2) Our thermal imaging equipment will operate beautifully in the cold.

(3) The U.S. prefers to fight at night, and the winter will provide long nights.

(4) The Afghan (and Russian!) history of not fighting as much during the winter will leave them open to a nasty surprise. The United States has a division devoted to training for winter mountain fighting:
drum.army.mil

A lot of the attraction of the Taliban is in their ability to provide for the common welfare. That means safety and food. The winter months will be unpleasant for them, economically and militarily, and therefore also unpleasant politically.
