Would anyone be so good as to enlighten me why the flea that caused the Black Death in 1347-1350 AD in Europe was called the Oriental Rat Flea?

I read that those fleas came off the backs of European rats. But why the name Oriental Rat Flea????????????? By the way, at that time, Europeans had not yet reached the Orient by boat.

Also, I would like to know why the common cockcroach present in most households the world over is known as the American cockcroach.
