"Most people" don't upgrade their RAM, because the other changes to the PC are necessary as well (ie. storage and processor speed), so they wait and replace the entire PC at once.

Not true - RAM is key to extending the life of a machine, storage and processor speed are a distant second.

We are another year or two away from very good speech recognition software and applications. When that happens, people will be replacing PCs made in 1999 and 2000 like crazy.

Who cares about a year or two? I want to know what will drive PC sales in the next 6 months. And I don't believe XP alone will be enough to drive it.

Clearly, this issue is more complex than saying there are two groups of users, the PC enthusiast and the AOL knucklehead.
