My computer runs my sprinkler system. I can access it from the web and change the settings when I'm away on business.

I have a web cam set up on it so that I can view the inside of my home when I'm at work.

I have a security system hooked up to the pc and have it set up to notify the local PD if someone trips the alarm.

I've set up virtual photo albums. I have videos that I've edited and burned onto cd's.

I wouldn't be calling people foolish before you know what they really have done with their pc. I have had the sprinkler system hooked up for THREE YEARS.

The house is completely home networked with the exception of the washer, dryer, refrigerator and dishwasher. We have printer sharing with two different printers hooked up. The system extends through the entire two floors of the house.

The butler is not going to make me buy another pc, but please be my guest and list the OTHER 99 things that you can think of. Maybe there really is something that I need right away that my system won't run.

>> The PC will be the hub of everyday life.

PC sales are going down and most people prefer to spend their money on different stuff, like PDAs (Palm, Pocket PC, mobile phone), appliances (Playstation, XBox, Tivo, Television), services (overcharged sms's) etc.

The number of online transactions paid with sms has already passed the number of online transactions with credit cards in Denmark, and will probably make the number of credit cards transactions on the web look tiny in a year or two.

Also try to look at business: Citrix, Windows Terminal Services, Intranets etc. are hot and are getting hotter all the time. Using Citrix doesn't require a PC.

Instead of PCs, the future is embedded and servers. Linux is stronger than Windows in both areas today.
