Couple of points -

1. My original post on this subject indicated that the U.S. did not dictate the posture of W. Germany and Japan. Whatever Japan may have agreed to, secretly or not, is an indication of Japan making a decision in its self-interest, not the U.S. making them do something.

2. FYI, I was, in the early 80s, one of the principle officers at COMUSJAPAN concerned with political-military affairs and often acted as official spokesman in matters related to nuclear weapons and particularly the aircraft carrier Midway. On more than one occasion, I coordinated these issues between CINCPAC and GOJ Foreign Ministry.

As far as I know, the statement, "The United States neither confirms nor denies......" is still golden.
