After our 100 hour war with Iraq we seemed to bail on the Kurds and did nothing much by way of furthering what appeared to be a the mutual interest in helping S. Hussein leave town. We set up no fly zones and stuck to sanctions which, from what I've heard, have done much more harm than good. Seems to me that economic sanctions don't touch much more than the innocent -- which was perhaps the more or less cynical plan that's showing signs of backfiring in a big way.

We're too interested and dependent on Saudi oil to screw with those guys, however corrupt they may be.

Afghanistan could be a nation. The idea isn't silly. Under the circumstances the idea is anything but silly.
