There are many history books which state an invasion of Japan could have taken years & tens of thousands of American lives. Remember, Japan was the aggressor, the evil, the bad guys. After the unprovoked sneak attack at Pear Harbor & their absolute torture allied Prisoners of War at the Batan Death March & others, there were rational Americans which objected saying we stopped short - That we should have destroyed the entire Island. A subgrouping of those said that we should have continued dropping Atomic Bombs until we were assured there would never be another Japanese person or a Japan. The debate will continue, for ever, you will not solve it here. There are valid rational points on both sides. One must also ask if those that now question the acts have another agenda, do they also hate the US and why Japan still does not teach in their schools about their unanounced unprovoked attack on Pearl Harbor. Face it, War is Hell, and you don't stop the devil with words.

you seem to be ignorant (or just want to overlook) of the fact that for almost every island the americans took back from the japanese that rather than surrender the japanese soldiers fought (except for a very small percent) until their deaths. it was quite clear to all the military that for japanese homeland islands, kyushu, etc., the japanese soldiers plus the population of japan would have fought in just the same manner. even when the us dropped leaflets on the japanese warning them about an unreal new bomb, they did not respond. even after the first atomic bomb they did not surrender. i am not trying to convince you of anything, because you are just a contrarian and because your neurons are clearly frozen too.
