heehee, in that same vein, I am totally dumbfounded regarding all the coverage about airline safety "improvements" by our so-called experts. Here's a little thought experiment that I put together in five minutes. (What could an international terrorist organization put together in, say, two years of concentrated effort?)

Ok, let's say, I'm a terrorist cell and I want to defeat these new "improved" airline safety procedures.

Q: Assuming (and it's a big assumption) that all airport safety checks (belt scanners, body scanners, etc. etc.) are absolutely foolproof and NO weapons at all make it on to any planes, how do we (the hijackers) take over the plane ?

A: Simple. Multiple hijackers with martial arts training. There are uncounted ways to disable and/or instantly kill someone. One or two examples of that demonstrated in front of the passengers is as big a deterrent against rushing the hijackers as a box-cutter would be.

Q: OK, smarta$$, suppose we put multiple armed uniformed sky-marshalls aboard ?

A: You are kidding me, right ? Martial arts (used in a surprise manner) are just as effective on an armed person.

Q: Ok, then, suppose we put those sky marshalls in plain clothes.

A: We know that the hijacker teams were made up of 1 pilot, a backup pilot (in case the first one was incapacitated) and two or three "muscle" men to protect the others (who by the way, did NOT know they were on a suicide mission). All you need to do is begin the hijacking which will draw out the marshalls while holding back the rest of your team. In that way, the marshalls can be identified. At that point the marshalls can be overcome in the manner described in the previous answer.

Q: Ok, what's the solution ?

A: All planes must be retrofitted (and all new planes designed) such that entry to the cockpit can only be gained from outside the plane. The wall between the cockpit and the passenger compartment must be sufficiently strong so that any effort to break through can only be by explosives strong enough to also blow out the side of the plane, thus bringing it down (tragic, yes, but we cannot allow any more guided missiles, period.) Sky marshalls sole purpose should be to protect passengers. They cannot be intended to protect the plane from being taken over. That won't work.

Q: Ok, how do you keep the plane from being commandeered on the ground (with the hijackers entering thru the pilot's outside entrance and overcoming them there) ?

A: Well, you can't keep that from happening but that makes for a much more difficult hijacking because you have to take over the plane, taxi to the runway, communicate with the tower, request clearance for takeoff, takeoff, ....
and all of this without rousing suspicion. There is a reason that hijackers always wait until the plane is in the air.

Anyway, the point is: I never hear anywhere (TV, radio, Internet) about the experts talking about the above scenarios. Am I just missing something ? Has anybody else seen people talking about the realities of this situation ? Where have all the clear-thinking people gone ?
