It's about marketing mostly and in msft's case, the monopoly on the OS for pc based systems sure helped.

I get so tired of the constant monopoly whining cr@p. AAPL could have ported their OS to x86 platforms years ago, but chose instead to keep the whole proprietary Apple pie to themselves. Dumb choice, seen in retrospect, but their own fault.
