It's not something I hold absolutely in the sense that I think it is universal. It is universal for me and the people of my country that are patriots. It a set of underlying principles. How people can swear to uphold the Constitution whilst thrashing people with it is beyond me.

I'm willing to bend the Constitution but not break it. Once these principles become mockeries, where fascist imbeciles can intimidate others into being silent, you might as well move the USSR or Cuba.

It takes little more than a national emergency for countrymen to turn on countrymen. I've seen it first hand and it is ugly. This process begins with identifying those "outside" the system as expendable and proceeds inward to an utter police state mentality. If you ever let the barbarians through the gate, you are lost.

<The McCarthy hearings were a political witch hunt for people who had political and philosophical disagreements. It was not war, and no ones life was in imminent danger. >

Greg that is not true. This was the height of the Cold War. Those McCarthyists were gung ho. They were ready to suspend the Constitution because they were at war with the Soviets. As for me deciding to suspend the Constitution with my vigilantism vis-a-vis the family protection example, then that is me doing it and not an agency of the government. There is no protection for me if I take the law into my own hands. I will have to rely upon other things then and not expect protection from the rule of law.

Villans can hide in the government and abuse their perceived power with utter impunity while free from scrutiny and consequence.
