There was no direct military threat to the U.S. except for the Cuban missile crisis, and certainly noting even remotely like what happened on Sept 11, which continues with the escalation in both Afghanistan and at home with anthrax and......? Way different situation. But then again, I share many of your concerns. The Canadian Government is currently granting itself unlimited powers to usurp personal privacy and then perpetually keep it's secrets from any outside scrutiny. I don't like it at all, but I'm not sure it can be stopped. There is no sunset clause or any review provisions that mean anything. It's scary. I am in favor of limited suspension of some freedoms for a specific, limited, periods of time. Unfortunately some evil people have abused our generosity and turned our immigration policies into a Trojan horse. How can we survive if we do not address that? One advantage we have is also our weakness. These acts are carried out by people from particular countries with easily recognizable physical and linguistic characteristics. But we don't want to profile based on cultural distinctive's? We are fools if we don't. Frankly, I think we should return to the cold war adage of "trust but verify" when it comes to our Muslim neighbors. Again, I don't like it, but this is a war, and if we handcuff ourselves, we may not survive. If we come away from this with only the WTC, and the relatively minor anthrax letters, then we might be alright, but if something else major happens, then all bets are off. What happened to the Japanese Americans during ww2 will undoubtably be repeated. It won't be right, but it will be done. But then again, there is no right or wrong anyway, so hey!
