Re: No books: I am familiar with the problem you raise and sympathize with your point of view. However, in some school districts, books "disappear" in large numbers after a few weeks, at a large cost to the school district. As a result, teachers pass out xeroxed handouts instead, often of the applicable pages in the textbook, along with supporting reading material.

Or, students pass the textbooks to the front of the room after the bell rings.

My wife, who is a teacher, also laments the fact that many children cannot take home a textbook at night.

Again, I would argue that lack of respect for textbooks/the learning process is not the fault of teachers, but rather the fault of parents.
