An informal, unscientific survey. Is anyone planning on upgrading to XP before the end of the year?

I have no plans to upgrade my OS in the foreseeable future.

John - Re: "Is anyone planning on upgrading to XP before the end of the year? "

I plan on trying out Windows XP Professional. Most likely, I wil use a sepaarate Boot hard drive - and maintain my Windows 2000 PRO setup on my existing Boot Drive.

Re: "Will you buy new hardware/upgrade your computer at the same time?"

Nope - I have a 700 MHz PC/512 Meg memory. That should work.

I will, independently, upgrade to a 1.13 GHz/512K L2 Tualatin - in the not too distant future.

JF, <Is anyone planning on upgrading to XP before the end of the year?>

It would be easy if MS didn't charge $200 just for an upgrade from Win2K to WinXP Pro. (Win2K to WinXP Home isn't an option, I don't think.)

I sure hope MS is charging the PC OEMs much less to pre-install WinXP. Maybe that's the idea, to force people to buy new PCs instead of upgrading their existing ones.

John:

I just upgraded my HP Omnibook 6000 laptop (thanks Intel!) with another 128M PC133 SODIMM from Kingston for $39 (now I have 256M).

I'm going to attend my local St. Louis Windows XP launch event on 10/30, and they're supposed to hand out $50 rebate coupons. If that's the case, I'll probably go ahead and buy XP Pro. Sam's Club has it the cheapest I've found, at $185 for the upgrade. With the additional 27% savings from the rebate, it would be marginally worth it.

Have been running RC1 for quite a while and like it very much, will definitely upgrade to gold. While the improvement from 2k may be trivial, the refinements added up worth every penny for the upgrade.

I have already upgraded my PII 300 desktop(3 years old) to a new Dell Insparon Celeron 750 with a nice 14" LCD and bump up the memory to 320M and my network to 802.11b. The wirless network made me feel good the most, with the drop in price recently, anyone should try and forget all those wires.

John, XP is available for all recent buyers of Dell's newer models. A 'coupon' entitles the buyer to get an XP upgrade sent for a nominal fee. Smart on Dell's part so months ago people didn't 'wait' for XP to buy new equipment. Of course according do Dan all Dell (INTC processor) customers are 'suckers.' This day of bump up alone in INTC has paid for my new P4... and then some. hee hee

I will be getting my mom a new PC, which will undoubtedly come with XP. Her Pentium 200 just isn't quite cutting it now that she has DSL and has started figuring out how to use some of the more advanced features.

I'll probably upgrade one of my PCs, as I'll want to be able to do some level of compatibility testing and because I'll need to have a copy of it just to provide "user support" for mom. No need for new hardware anytime soon as my twin PIII/500 is quite adequate, as is the PIII/450 in the notebook.
