Seems to me that the education system is moving in two directions. On one hand, the lower end of the spectrum seems to be eroding further, as evidenced by 75% dropout rates at some inner-city high schools. On the other hand, we're seeing lots of success stories with high school International Baccalaureate and advanced placement programs. Based on my own kids' experience in applying to colleges, and in talking to other parents as well, there's no shortage of kids in this country who scored 30 or higher on their ACT. Competition to get into top universities is most intense today. Most intense.

So while the K-12 public education system is continuing to experience problems, it's also turning out a large number of very bright and highly qualified high school students every year.
