Milo,

Check out this performance comparison from PC Magazine:

pcmag.com

The chart (linked at the bottom of the page) for the P4 and Athlon results shows the P4 with a Business Winstone score of 47, while the Athlon scores 53. What is really interesting is that the 2.0 Ghz P4 and the 1.4 Ghz Athlon have similar scores under Windows ME and Windows 2000, but the Athlon takes a big performance lead under Windows XP. This chart clearly shows that the Athon is much better optimized (or at least relatively more efficient) for Windows XP than the P4 is. Intel should be sued for false advertising.

Of course you can throw out the Content Creation scores, since they rely heavily on SSE -- which the Athon does not have.

I wonder why PC Magazine didn't use an Athlon XP 1800+ in this review. They must have not wanted to embarrass Intel more than using the Athlon 1400 already did.

Pravin.
