Hi Nadine,

Frankly, I'm not sure if you are trying to pull the wool over my eyes or if you honestly haven't read anything other than the white bread press for the last few decades.

Addressing a couple of your points:

Then how come we don't have a global empire?

Mainenance cost calculations. You see, it's far better, as I've discussed upstream on this thread, to use modern means of enslavement and subjugation. The banking system presents a number of interesting gambits that avoid the perusal of most less-than-keen observers. Likewise, it is often the case that general populations are unruly, so a good gambit is to install ruthless autocrats who will play along with the corporate interests. A long list of these thugs, from Saddam Hussein, Manuel Noriega, Pinochet, the Duvaliers, the Somozas, Marcos, Pahlavi, etc. are all favorites of our CIA and have been well supported for their efforts on the behalf of corporate interests. OTOH, democrats like Mossadeq, Castro, Ho Chi Minh, Allende etc. have been brusquely brushed aside, painted as enemies, ostracized and made to appear to the American people to be ogres. Yet it is this later group of national leaders who more clearly represent the American ideal of democratic self-realization than any of the former mentioned despots who are the chosen among our CIA's list of pals.

So don't give me this 'mantle of Anglo-Saxon imperium' crap. I'm not buying any.
I'll grant you that the Marshall Plan was a wonderful example of American largesse and human decency. The problem I'm having if finding any more recent examples..... think about it.

Best, Ray :)
