This is where you are both right and wrong. True head to head competition should be avoided. That is to say, AMD should make it very clear that vendors who play the game AMD's way will be able to compete. But, AMD needs to take more direct control of the market.

There are several ways that AMD could accomplish this, beginning with avoiding the inclusion of any Windows compatible software bundle. Each Silicon Graphics branded PC would instead include a Linux compatible productivity suite running under Irix, a gaming bundle running under Irix, and a creativity bundle running under Irix. This creativity bundle might include not only CD-R creation software, but 3D rendering and animation as well. Additionally, each Silicon Graphics system, even consumer versions, might include compilers and debuggers as part of the OS. Indeed, such tasks as MPEG compression might be included in the OS as applets.
