JLA, even if the autopilot was not smart enough to actually land the plane, it could get the plane to a landable area. The pilot could then get control back, perhaps on final with enough time to complete the landing.

On less sophisticated aircraft, the auto-pilot emergency system would simply broadcasts an emergency message and go into a holding pattern.

I would also study the feasibility of using some sort of sleeping agent to knock out the cabin inhabitants.

Yes, it can be done. It would require landing systems upgrades at several airports across the country to give the aircraft a destination within, let's say, 1 hour flight time of a commercial jet anywhere over the US. Not all airports would require it, maybe about a dozen.
