Taiwan-listed Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, one of the world's largest contract manufacturers of chips, invested T$7.7bn in research and development (R&D) of the 0.13-micron manufacturing process for 12-inch chipsets in the first three quarters of 2001. The investment is 2.4-fold that of the same period of the year 2000. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing's investment in the R&D in 2001 is expected to stand at more than T$10bn. The company has started mass producing chipsets with 0.15- micron and 0.13-micron technologies. <end>
