k ramesh,

I love your mind. You are, bar none the most brilliant great game strategist on the board. My hat's off to you. I feel like a mere knave of a tactician in your presence. Of course, I've only been obsessed by this region for a few weeks, so maybe I can catch up. Need somebody to carry your water over here, bwana? I'm you man, Kim.

The really funny thing to me is that Afghanistan has held its borders more or less intact since 1747. That is an extraordinary accomplishment, in view of the rampant efforts of outsiders to meddle and interfere. I'm quite impressed by the resiliency of the country, no matter how dysfunctional our Western press portrays it today. I guess the hashish and opium trade help. But what I've never quite been able to figure out is why the country was formed in its disparate tribal parts to begin with. Perhaps you can help me to understand. We have Pashtus, Hazaras, Uzbeks and Tajiks. How did they all get together in 1747, or were there migrations subsequent to the founding of the nation that overtook national boundaries as tribes spread their growing populations? Anyway, you seem to be the best person to address these questions to, since I know of not a single American who has a clue, save Karl Meyer and his wife who wrote "Tournament of Champions", a book I highly recommend to those who would like to get a flavor for the history of the Great Game. Anahoo, comments welcomed. And your plan really is brilliant. That is exactly why it will never be adopted.

Salaams, Ray

CIA inducts ex-Khad agents to topple Taliban regime
Fakhar-ur-Rehman
Updated on 11/5/2001 12:00:46 PM

ISLAMABAD: While United States is facing sheer disappointment in its military campaign against Afghanistan and in its efforts to dismantle the Taliban government, Central Intelligence Agency has already started recruitment of ex Khad agents who have served during the period of Dr. Najibullah in Afghanistan to achieve the objective of dismantling Taliban regime.

Reliable sources have told the Frontier Post that US after the killing of Abdul Haq by Taliban forces, have now started preparing Shahnawaz Tanai for a leading role against the Taliban.

Tanai has served as a Chief of the Khad Intelligence Network and Defence Minister during the period of former President of Afghanistan Dr. Najibullah.

Shahnawaz Tanai, who is in Peshawar nowadays, had left Afghanistan in 1994 when the Taliban movement had just started from southern city of Kandahar.

Sources said these Ex Khad agents have been offered very lucrative salaries and many of them have already been launched inside Afghanistan.

On the other hand United States is pursuing its plans of dividing Afghanistan in to North and South.

US Secretary of Defence Rumsfeld is hectically making consultations with main partners of the coalitions.

Sources revealed that north part of the country which according to US plans would be known as the Northern Republic of Afghanistan would be given recognition by the International community as an Independent country and that US and Russians would play a key role for providing and creating a regular army duly equipped with all types of modern warfare weapons including fighter planes, tanks, APC etc.

According to the plan fight against terrorism then would continue from the northern side.

It must have very disappointing note for Tony Blair, Coilin Powell and Rumsfeld to hear what Pakistan has abundantly made it clear before that its troops will not participate in any operations outside its territories.

Rest of the Afghanistan would be known as the southern part mainly dominated by the Pukhtoons.

But for this objective to realize Americans are striving hard for the fall of Kabul and Mazar-e- Sharif.

Whether such a plan would materialize or not is a question mark at the moment.
