The exhaustive studies by Benny Morris, Erskine Childers, Simha Flapan (controversial only because of their implications) conclusively demonstrate that any Arab appeals to evacuate were a miniscule factor, if any. Arab appeals to stay put were quite significant, yet they have been conveniently ignored by the Israeli contingent. Fanatics like Begin and Shamir had instilled such terror into the hearts of the Palestinians that they felt compelled to run away. The record is fairly clear on that.

And, of course, this whole discussion is intended to distract from the fact that Israel was (and is) required to allow the Palestinians to return to their homes, regardless of why they fled.
