Define "Western civilization would collapse in a violent spasm ". And that is just your statement. What's your reasons and/or argument for the above statement?

If you're talking about doing without oil from our Royal enemies in the Middle East, 13% of US oil comes from S.A., without which we would do just fine. The state of California reduced energy consumption 17% in a single month w/o reducing growth, just by being careful. The U.S. has a luxurious amount of energy usage & wastage, and innovative ways to manage reductions, plus friendly sources. SA has basically held US hostage while at the same time paying "protection" to bin Laden terrorists, who declared war on the US. They have been found out, and their lobbyists and payola to polliticians is in overdrive to try to keep the American Consumer. Hopefully it won't work, but so far, it has.
