I don't think I have any Indian blood, but if I did I would be very proud of it.

My great grandmother Roebuck was in the Oklahoma land rush. A family story holds that she rebuffed the advances of an Indian brave by feeding him all her horehound drops which he ate with relish and then suffered the consequences. She was a relative of the Roebuck who with Sears started the big catalog company.

I worked in upstate New York in my better days. My job brought me to virtually every corner of the counties I studied. The pioneers left their mark. Many graveyards, surrounded by nothing but trees. Stone fences. Abandoned apple orchards. I often had my lunch by finding an old apple orchard because I relished the fruits that still grew there.

Those graveyards told a story of their own. Children, lovers, mothers, fathers, gone too soon.
