T, Unfortunately, I developed gout a few years back and have had to limit my wine drinking to almost none. So, I will be speaking from memory. My favorites include Ridge Geyserville, Rafanelli, some Swans (they are very iffy since old man Swan passed on, but still great some times), on the high priced side, the Ravenswood individual vineyard names, on the cheaper side, Ravenswood's house blend (that's not the name, but I can't remember what they call it. Something like Vintner's Choice or something along that line) is nearly as good for half the price. Many do not like the Geyserville, as it is a blend and is an early bloomer, but I love it.

Happy sipping,

MB

Tommaso,

My favorite red Zin is Grgich Hills. It's pretty potent stuff -- full-bodied and high alcoholed! Grgich isn't cheap, but luckily its Cabs and Chardonnays go for much more. grgich.com

One nice resource I've just found out about on the web is wine-searcher.com, which directs you individual wine stores that carry a particular wine you want to find.

I live in New York, which has stringent requirements about importing wine from out-of-state, so many online stores won't ship here. But for those who have easier access, this site helps solve the problem of how you find that wine that you liked at a restaurant that your local wine store doesn't carry.

Can you recommend a red zinfandel?....I understand the red z's can be kind of tricky and I'd rather not drink my way through overpriced bottles finding out.

Pardon me for jumping in and responding, but I saw the chat on red zinfandel. You are correct, no reason to drink your way through overpriced bottles trying to find out what's what. Since I was pleasantly surprised with a recent purchase, I can vouch for the 1998 Geyser Peak (Sonoma County) red zinfandel which should be easy to find nowadays. It's good enough quality that you can drink it now, or store it in the cellar for a couple of years to continue the aging.

It won't break you (should easily be found under $18 - 20 a bottle - even less if bought in quantity) and is hearty enough to go with red meat - especially lamb, but also drinks well with bird and game that comes with dark sauces.

Now, back to by bottle of beer...

T,

Give Fife ($19) a shot. A super wine though by no means a cheap Zin. If you're looking to do some experimenting in Red, try Australian. After a few trips over the past year or so, I found it hard to come back here and justify buying a bottle of just about anything....can't touch Aussie value. Only problem is that if my FAX appreciates, I suppose my wine dollar won't be stretching as far.

Best,
Doug

try the Seghesio 99...very jammy, lingering aftertaste, fruit bomb that ZinFans love but this one is $14 in Florida. The "R" vineyards are always the first to mind as they have produced them for a long time.

Another high value Zin is Rancho Zabaco...Gallo by any other name however it has done well in blind tastings up against some of the aformentioned R wines.

If you want some really high value reds, I love a Spanish wine at 6 bucks,2000 Vina Alarba Grenache, Old Vines that is highly perfumed, chewy like a good Zin and no one ever believes it is so cheap. You can drink it now.
