close range to a nuclear bombs was scary
We were 20-50 miles away from any credible target, but we were downwind. Our school had a duck and cover drill each day during those couple of weeks, but mostly we had clean up drills for washing down the area for fallout. They taught the older kids to handle a fire hose, but I was young enough that we were instructed to wash our hands and face and wait inside until our parents came to get us. We would have at least one atomic bomb duck & cover drill per year until I got to high school (4 short rings of the school bell meant duck, If followed by another 3 it meant evacuate as if for a fire).
