I think this discussion is moot.. You are going to look at selective items that reinforces your own thinking and ignore anything else.. Afghanistan and Talibans are the extreme of the extreme in their outlook are a fringe group but you look at that and paint a billion people with the same brush..

Qu'ran is open to interpretation.. Other wise, you would not have the discussions and disagreements amongst Muslims... Qu'ran says, there is no compulsion in religion.. I believe that.. Qu'ran acknowledges prophets and revelations before Islam.. Each group, tribe, and region, what have you had some divine revelations over recorded history.. So what does it mean in context of faith and spirit.. Is one group has the lock on the 'truth' and salvation will be only for that select group.. Or do you believe that for each faith, essential message is the same.. Means of practicing differs..

Some are stuck with forms and rituals, which are mandatory in their own ways, and others move past that to look for a higher plane.. Searching for God (even understanding Islam) is a bit different then arguing about 4 wives. All of this, I am afraid is probably too esoteric for you..

There are other links and other information out there as I said before but I am not sure any of that is going to do much to convince you.. But for other folks, I am going to post couple of the links...
