Press Release

Ericsson today announced its support for Cingular Wireless’ plan to upgrade its nationwide network by introducing Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution (EDGE) technology. This strategic choice will enable Cingular to build a state-of-the-art wireless network and prepare it for third-generation services and applications.

The upgrade to EDGE means Cingular subscribers throughout the United States will realize the benefits of always-on packet data technology fast enough to support full-motion video. Furthermore, Cingular Wireless customers with GSM World phones will benefit from seamless global roaming.

"Ericsson is proud that Cingular Wireless has selected us as a primary vendor for mobile infrastructure and handsets," Ericsson Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Angel Ruiz said. "Cingular Wireless’ selection of Ericsson’s third-generation platform is a testament to the strong historical relationship between our two companies. By deploying GSM in their existing 850 MHz and 1900 MHz spectrum, Cingular will realize substantial cost savings."

Additionally, Cingular’s network will include an advanced mobile positioning system for GSM to enable Cingular to locate subscribers who dial 911 and convey information about their whereabouts to public safety answering points.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

About GSM

GSM is the world's most widely deployed wireless communications standard, with more than half a billion subscribers worldwide. Ericsson is the global market leader in GSM.

About EDGE

EDGE is a global 3G standard, and is regarded as a key factor in access and service convergence between GSM and TDMA networks worldwide. Using EDGE, customers will be able to take with them their full set of service features as they roam between GSM and TDMA networks on all frequency bands. <<
