Tech Stocks Rise on Sun; Market Up in Oct
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks finished mixed on Wednesday after data showed the U.S. economy shrank less than feared in the third quarter, but Wall Street finished the jinx month of October with a gain.

Technology stocks rose, helped by an improved sales forecast from bellwether Sun Microsystems Inc. (NasdaqNM:SUNW - news) An early rally in blue chips faded, dragged down by a big decline in the shares of Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE:EK - news) after rating agency Moody's Investors Service cut its debt rating for the beleaguered photography giant.
The U.S. economy suffered its worst contraction since the first quarter of 1991. GDP, the broadest measure of U.S. economic health, shrank 0.4 percent in the third quarter. The number still managed to beat economists' projected 1 percent drop and helped spark an early rally because it soothed fears of a severe and prolonged downturn.
``While continuing to show weakness and the onset of a recession, it was not as bad as expected,'' said Barry Hyman, chief investment strategist at Ehrenkrantz King Nussbaum. ``This leads you to believe that the policies of lower interest rates and the fiscal policies will start to help the economy or have a greater chance of helping the economy in 2002.''
Wall Street is girding for bleak readings on the manufacturing sector and job market later this week. Some economists expect the U.S. economy will turn in an even worse performance in the fourth quarter as the Sept. 11 attacks paralyzed economic activity.
``You will need a lot of fortitude to see the mountaintop when we are in the depths of the valley,'' said Jay Mueller, economist and portfolio manager at Strong Capital Management Inc., which oversees $42 billion.
The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) was up 22.79 points, or 1.37 percent, at 1,690.20, after posting a gain of more than 3 percent earlier in the day. The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) lost 46.84 points, or 0.51 percent, to finish at 9,075.14. The broad Standard & Poor's 500 index (.SPX) dipped 0.01 of a point to 1,059.78.
For the month, the Dow rose 2.57 percent, the S&P gained 1.81 percent and the Nasdaq advanced 12.77 percent.
October is known as the ``jinx month'' because of market crashes in 1929, 1987, and the Dow's 554-point drop on Oct. 27, 1997, plus ``back-to-back massacres in 1978 and 1979,'' according to Yale Hirsch, editor of the Stock Trader's Almanac 2001.
Yet October can be a ``bear killer,'' he adds, noting that the month has turned the tide in nine bear markets: 1946, 1957, 1960, 1962, 1966, 1974, 1987, 1990 and 1998. November, by contrast, usually is among a year's top three months for the S&P 500 along with December and January.
Sun Microsystems, the most active stock on Nasdaq, jumped 61 cents, or 6.4 percent, to $10.51 after the network computer maker said orders were tracking higher this quarter than they were this time last quarter.
``Any time that you get a beaten-down tech stock that gives a positive comment, the perception is that the bottom has been seen,'' Hyman said. ``That is a good sign for that stock and for tech in general. There's always a collateral effect.''
Eastman Kodak, down $2.23, or 8 percent, at $25.57, pressured the blue-chip Dow after Moody's cut its debt rating and warned it may lower the long-term rating again amid falling profits.
Continental Airlines Inc. (NYSE:CAL - news), the No. 5 U.S. air carrier, posted a third-quarter profit, helped by $243 million in federal grants aimed at staving off the sharp decline in air travel after last month's attacks. Shares rose 84 cents to $17.49, or more than 5 percent.
Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), a Dow component and Nasdaq heavyweight, added 88 cents, or 3.7 percent, to $24.42. The world's largest chip maker sounded a bullish note for long-term growth, saying the billions it's spending this year will yield profits and market share gains once the high-tech recession abates and growth resumes.
Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT - news) climbed 23 cents to $16.37 after the wireless giant said its global market share rose in the July-September quarter from the second quarter, boosted by sales of new products.
Adobe Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:ADBE - news) fell $2.35, or 8.2 percent, to $26.40. The publishing software vendor said it would cut 150 jobs, or 5 percent of its work force, and lowered revenue and earnings forecasts, citing weakening business after the September attacks.
Wall Street widely expects the economy to slip into a recession as the Sept. 11 attacks haunt the nation. But investors are hoping that more tax cuts and lower interest rates will lift the economy by 2002. President Bush urged Congress to pass a stimulus package by the end of November in a speech at the White House.
Most economists expect the economic contraction to last at least to the end of the year and if it does, the third quarter would mark the start of the first U.S. recession in 10 years. A recession is loosely defined as at least two straight quarters of falling GDP.
Another somewhat upbeat economic report came from the National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago, which said its October index slipped to 46.2 from 46.6 in September, but beat economists' estimates of a drop to 43.0.
The October index that showed less weakness than expected suggests regional manufacturing could bottom fairly soon, but does not necessarily mean Thursday's national survey by NAPM will follow suit, analysts said.
``What it's showing is that the economy, although it's slowing now, is slowing at a gradual pace as opposed to rapidly plunging off a cliff,'' said John Herrmann, chief economist at IDEAglobal. ``We think the NAPM index falls a little bit more than this because NAPM will capture corporations in New York and outside the region of Chicago.''
