"That was AMD's official line... Something about one of the components not being of the same high quality that AMD required."

The thing that gives that line some credibilty is that some of the motherboard models were fine. A better example of AMD spin was when the 760 northbridge wouldn't work with the VIA southbridge. They had to know that the motherboard manufacturers would want to use that chip, AMD does claim that they work with their customers. The fact that the VIA southbridge had other problems and made it's use a bad idea is not really relevant...

Fyo, Re: "That was AMD's official line... Something about one of the components not being of the same high quality that AMD required... but how much truth there is to that, well, your guess is as good as mine. I wouldn't exactly put it past AMD (or Intel, or VIA, for that matter) to give it a "hey, it wasn't our fault" spin."

I'll let you draw your own conclusions. The reason why I mentioned it in the first place was to show that I am consistent in my opinions, and not prone to the double standards that people like to accuse those they typecast as "Intellabees". I believe that if there is a specification that you wish to make compatible hardware for, then you ought to follow it. If you don't, and there are problems with your product, don't blame the owner of the specifications, blame yourself.
