I planned on getting a doctorate in liberal arts when I was an undergraduate, until I gradually realized how ineffectual, self-absorbed, and dysfunctional nearly all my professors were. Working in the real world to earn enough money for graduate school and inadvertantly achieving a level of real personal responsibility by doing so only heightened the contrast. By the time I started classes again, I had the definite sensation that I was dealing with a roomful of house-bound, unwittingly stir-crazy poodles.

The head of my graduate program drank himself to death. The assistant dean of the liberal arts college shot himself to death in his office after a well-publicized affair with a student. Another professor was robbed and murdered by a pair of black teenage prostitutes, who set his house on fire to hide the evidence....
