I wouldn't expect Intel to answer directly about the performance of their system relative to the competitor. Would you have expected Jerry Sanders to answer honestly, er... non-deceivingly, had the situation been reversed?

Edit: also, you should realize that upper management types like Paul Otellini don't sit around looking at benchmarks all day. He's got enough on his mind, that he relies on others to benchmark his data, which also brings up the possibility of his information being stale. As JC points out, at the Q3 CC, Paul rightfully claimed that the Pentium 4 was able to outperform the Athlon, and he could still be basing his words off of data from before the Athlon XP was launched.
